In Rod we trust?

Lovie finally got his guy. Today the Bears admit that no one outside of the organization wants to be a puppet for Lovie Smith in what might be his last year as head coach of the Chicago Bears. Therefore they have promoted Rod Marinelli from d-line coach to defensive coordinator.

You may remember back when Lovie first got the job his first choice to run the defense was Rod Marinelli who at the time was the d-line coach for the Tampa Bay Bucs. He was not allowed to interview for the spot due to some language in his contract that required the Bucs to give him permission to interview for a job even if it was a step up unless it was a head coaching job. Well the Bucs wanted to hold onto Rod because they kept losing defensive assistants and were always worried they might lose Monte Kiffin.

Therefore Lovie decided to go with former Bear, Ron Rivera who he would kick out the door after the Super Bowl run. And caused Matt Millen to reach for Marinelli after he fired another head coach in Detroit since he could only offer him a head coaching job to get him out of Tampa.

An interesting side note to all this is the Marinelli and Martz relationship since Martz used to run the offensive in Detroit for Marinelli before the 0-16 season.

My only question now is when will Rod's son-in-law join the staff? Any other friends of Lovie need a job or a raise?
